The Science Behind TifTuf Bermuda

TIFTUF™ was bred as one of 27,700 experimental bermudagrass genotypes. In 1999, ninety of the most promising genotypes were planted under a rainout shelter and evaluated through 2001 under deficit irrigation. Under this drought stress, TIFTUF™ (tested as experimental name DT-1) maintained its quality and green colour the longest.

Prior to its release, TIFTUF™ had been further tested in 19 drought-stress trials, 2 sports field wear tolerance trials, utilising the Cady traffic simulator, and 4 irrigated, non-stress trials at The University of Georgia, The University of Florida, North Carolina State University, Oklahoma State University and Texas A&M University as part of the Federal Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) grant. It has now been determined that TIFTUF™ will become the University research standard by which all drought tolerance will be determined.

Does TifTuf grow in the shade?

TifTuf Bermuda needs at least 5 hours of direct sunlight all year round to thrive in its environment. If you have any questions about lawn care, please contact our friendly staff. 

Is TifTuf Bermuda wear tolerant?

The name says it all – TifTuf is tough! This variety has a very fine leaf blade with dense growth, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications. Its density enables it to handle high-wear situations like backyards and sports fields whilst its fine blade ensures shade tolerance and a very soft leaf to walk on.

Is TifTuf Bermuda drought tolerant?

TifTuf Turf is a grass that has been bred to stand up to drought conditions and save you water. With TifTuf becoming the new benchmark when it comes to measuring the drought tolerance of turf. TifTuf can be established with a fraction of the water that most other varieties require. Part of this is due to the rapidly establishing root system that can see it take root in less than 7 days, which can be up to 75% quicker than other varieties.

Is TifTuf Bermuda good for dogs?

Yes, TifTuf Turf is self-repairing and extremely wear tolerant. Its rapid growth helps it repair itself quickly from urine burning. If you have any questions about lawn care, our friendly staff are here to help so give us a call!

 Does TifTuf Bermuda grow in Winter?

Yes, all turf varieties can be established in winter. However, the establishment period is slightly longer due to the cooler weather and the plant going into dormancy.

 Does TifTuf Bermuda spread?

Yes, TifTuf has a rapid regrowth ability, especially in Spring & Summer. You can plant TifTuf in plugs and allow it to grow over (this can be a cheaper option than turfing the whole area).

Is TifTuf Bermuda a couch grass? 

Yes, TifTuf is a couch grass – it has been bred to be hardier, and more drought tolerant than other couch varieties available on the market.

Can you scalp TifTuf Bermuda?

Yes, TifTuf can be scalped if not mowed and looked after consistently. If you are having problems with this, our friendly staff are incredibly knowledgeable and can discuss our latest product Primo Maxx which is a growth regulator.

How short can you cut TifTuf Bermuda?

TifTuf Bermuda Grass can be cut as low as 8mm and kept up to 36mm. We always recommend regular mowing for the best appearance.

How often should you water TifTuf Bermuda Grass?

How do you lay TifTuf Bermuda?

Installing your new turf can be easy!

Prior to laying turf check that the soil surface is not too hot. Lightly wet the soil down if it is hot.

Install your lawn immediately upon delivery. Turf is degrading on the pallet, and it is recommended that all turf should be laid within 4 hours of delivery in summer/spring & 12 hours in winter/autumn, failing to do so can lead to pallet burn.

Begin installing turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or footpath.

Butt and push ends against each other tightly, without stretching.

Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a large sharp knife to trim corners.

On slopes, place the turf pieces across the slope.

After installing the turf, roll the entire area, this will improve the contact between the turf and soil and help with levelling.

Begin watering the lawn within 30 minutes (in Spring/Summer) and 60 minutes (in Winter/Autumn) of installation. Turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture.

During the first two weeks, avoid heavy or concentrated use of your new lawn, this gives the roots an opportunity to firmly knit with the soil and ensures that the turf will remain smooth.

How is TifTuf Bermuda delivered?

Your turf supply will be loaded onto a pallet, and most of our trucks have forklifts on board that will unload the turf and place it as close as safely possible to your prepared area. If you are not home to receive your turf but would like it placed somewhere specific, please leave out some kind of marker (such as a paint mark on the ground, sign or cone) or call our friendly office staff so they can give instructions to our driver.

If no instructions are left, the driver will most likely place the turf onto your driver or wherever he/she feels most appropriate.

We use a unique pallet-less-lift-off system, which means the pallet stays on the truck instead of being left on site. We deliver to Gold Coast, Brisbane, Ipswich and everywhere in-between.
